What is melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland. That’s a pea-sized gland found just above the middle of your brain. It helps your body know when it’s time to sleep and wake up.

Melatonin plays a critical role in regulating wakefulness and sleep cycles. It also functions as an antioxidant.

Its activity is largely dependent on the circadian rhythm, in other words, the amount of light reaching the pineal gland. When light passes through the retina, the brain sends a message to the pineal gland to reduce the production of melatonin, which is how wakefulness occurs. When the light is low, the brain stimulates the pineal gland to produce melatonin; this prepares the body for sleep. Consequently, the pineal gland is most active in the dark.
